The song portrays Gretchen\u2019s emotional turmoil as she sits at her spinning wheel, overwhelmed by her thoughts of Faust.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"489\" data-end=\"850\">The piano accompaniment is far more than a simple harmonic support for the voice. The continuous, rapidly repeating figure represents the turning motion of the spinning wheel, while the sudden interruptions and changes in texture reflect Gretchen\u2019s increasingly agitated state of mind. The pianist therefore plays an essential dramatic role throughout the work.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"852\" data-end=\"1398\">Although the accompaniment may appear repetitive at first, it requires <strong data-start=\"923\" data-end=\"1029\">a high level of rhythmic control, endurance, balance, and sensitivity to the singer or solo instrument<\/strong>. The pianist must maintain the almost mechanical motion of the spinning wheel while simultaneously shaping the harmony, dynamics, and dramatic tension. In a violin arrangement, this becomes particularly interesting because the violin takes over the vocal line, requiring the pianist to preserve the original Lied character while responding to the violinist&#8217;s phrasing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1400\" data-end=\"1736\">The importance of the piano writing can also be appreciated through <strong data-start=\"1468\" data-end=\"1516\">Franz Liszt\u2019s celebrated piano transcription<\/strong>. Liszt transformed Schubert\u2019s song into a work for solo piano, published as No. 8 in <em data-start=\"1602\" data-end=\"1632\">12 Lieder von Franz Schubert<\/em>, S. 558. The transcription was made in 1837\u201338 and later revised.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1738\" data-end=\"2039\">Interestingly, Liszt\u2019s version does not simply turn the accompaniment into flashy virtuoso writing.
