Robert Schumann – Fantasiestücke, Op. 73, No. 1: “Zart und mit Ausdruck”
“Zart und mit Ausdruck” (“Tenderly and with Expression”) is the opening piece of Robert Schumann’s Fantasiestücke, Op. 73, composed in 1849. The work was originally written for clarinet and piano, with the clarinet part also intended for performance on violin or cello.
The first piece begins with the marking “Zart und mit Ausdruck”, immediately establishing an intimate and expressive character. Rather than presenting a purely virtuosic display, Schumann creates a musical dialogue in which the melodic instrument and piano continuously respond to one another.
The piano accompaniment is especially important to the character of the piece. It does not simply provide harmonic support for the melody. Its flowing figures, harmonic changes, and subtle rhythmic movement create the emotional space in which the violin line unfolds.
The structure also creates an interesting relationship between repetition and transformation. Musical ideas return, but their emotional meaning can change depending on the surrounding harmony, phrasing, articulation, and dynamics. This gives the performer considerable freedom to shape the repeated material as a developing musical conversation rather than as a mechanical repetition.
For violinists, the piece offers an intimate alternative to the conventional concerto-like repertoire. The violin must listen carefully to the piano, responding to its harmonic direction and rhythmic impulses while maintaining the expressive continuity of the melodic line.
This piano accompaniment is designed to preserve that conversational character, allowing the instrumentalist to practice and rehearse the work with a natural musical partner.
