I have determined that the piano right-hand melody part in the last measure of page 3 in https://violinfoundation.org/score/walking_alone.pdf is better suited for the violin, so I have removed it. You can refer to Frank Kim’s violin performance for this section in the future.

Guidance on Accompaniment Modification:

*In the score at https://violinfoundation.org/score/walking_alone.pdf, I have made the decision to remove the piano right-hand melody part in the last measure of page 3. This part is now better suited for the violin. For reference, you can consult Frank Kim’s violin performance for this section.

*Performed the accompaniment in a way that it ends on page 6, omitting the repeated section on the last page of the sheet music.

“Walking Alone” is a poignant piano accompaniment that reflects the melancholic and introspective atmosphere of Anna German’s song. With delicate melodies and harmonies, the accompaniment captures the bittersweet emotions and sense of solitude conveyed in the lyrics and the life of the poet Lermontov. Through gentle and expressive playing, the pianist guides the listener on a contemplative journey, evoking the longing for self-discovery and the acceptance of a solitary path in life. The accompaniment embraces the essence of the Russian romantic spirit, intertwining moments of yearning, resilience, and acceptance. It serves as a poignant musical backdrop, providing the perfect foundation for heartfelt interpretations and emotional storytelling.

Walking Alone: A Russian Romance

In the last week of November, even if I try not to, I can’t help but feel the indifference of time. The trees with fallen leaves, their weak foliage swaying in the wind, make me inexplicably sentimental, longing for solitude. It’s that late autumn… there is a song that captures the crowded and desolate atmosphere so well. It is “Je Vais Seul Sur la Route” (Walking Alone) by Anna German. If one were to walk alone on the road of life forever, how lonely and difficult would it be? There seems to be no other song that expresses that profound sentiment as perfectly as this one. The lyrics of “Je Vais Seul Sur la Route” are from a poem by the Russian lyrical poet Lermontov (1814-1841). Lermontov, who lost his mother at a young age and was raised under the care of his stepmother, experienced further tragedy when he lost his father before reaching adulthood. Overwhelmed by loneliness, he possessed such exceptional talent that he began writing narrative poems at the age of 16. However, due to his opposition to the Russian autocratic regime, he was exiled to the Caucasus three times. After engaging in controversies and duels with his former friend due to his outspokenness and provocative nature, Lermontov passed away at the age of 27.

In one of his poems, we find the following lines: “To forget everything and simply fall asleep in order to find myself.” It vividly conveys how deeply he was consumed by loneliness. When he says, “There is nothing more to desire in life, and I have no regrets even on the day of my departure,” it appears that he had no attachment to life whatsoever. It makes one wonder if he had resolved to the point of not even engaging in a duel, saying, “Enough, even in death.”
